MINEPDED and MINJEC discuss eco-citizenship and civic-mindedness with Yaounde youths.
The two ministries organised a joint conference on Tuesday 5 March at the Yaounde Chamber of Commerce, as part of the activities to commemorate 2024 Commonwealth edition in Cameroon. The session was officially opened by Representatives of MINEPDED (Mr. Rigobert NTEP) and MINJEC, accompanied by Representatives of MINREX and the British High Commission in Cameroon.
Its main objective was to empower and involve youth in their civic engagement for a sustainable environment.
Dozens of youths from schools and civil society organisations took part in the event, which focused on the theme: “The Commonwealth Year of the Youth: year of impact and Eco-citizenship”.
For this purpose, two panels were set up to address two major areas of interest :
- Youth impact programmes (social networks, ICTs – identity and opportunities, youth involvement in development, peace, etc.).
- A resilient environment to combat climate change (climate change, impacts and resilience, opportunities for youth in the environment sector, responsibility and action plan of Junior Members of Parliament for the Environment…)-
The speeches by the Junior Members of Parliament for the Environment were particularly well received. They were cited as an example of youth civic engagement towards the environment. Wearing their tricoloured scarves, the three young girls spoke with remarkable ease, advocating the involvement of the youth as well as their capacity to make an impact in the environmental sector.
Other youths also distinguished themselves by the quality of their paintings on climate change, which the audience was delighted to discover. The best of them received awards from the Ministry of Environment.
In conclusion, it is to be hoped that the quality of the panelists’ presentations, the high level of reactions and exchanges and the general enthusiasm that prevailed during this event augur a more promising future in the environmental sector, thanks to a stronger and more diversified commitment on the part of the youth.
