From 22-25 August in Vancouver, Canada: Cameroon is at the negotiating table.
Upon high instructions from the President of the Republic, the Minister of Environment, Mr. HELE Pierre, led the Cameroonian Delegation, which was made up of four (4) officials from the Ministry of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development (MINEPDED) and the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife (MINFOF).


On the 22 of August 2023, first day of deliberations, Cameroon took part in the meeting under the theme “Integrating gender into sustainable landscape management in the Congo Basin”. The meeting provided an opportunity to present the achievements of the implementation of the gender approach in the COBALAM and SUFACHAC projects in Cameroon.
On the second day of deliberations, Minister HELE Pierre and his delegation took part in two major events, namely: the High-Level Ministerial Meeting, during which strategic issues were discussed and addressed, and the Official Opening Ceremony, followed by a reception in the Conference Hall of the Vancouver Convention Centre in the presence of Canadian Authorities and Leaders of Canada’s indigenous people (Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil Waututh…).

The third day, that is to say the 24 August, was devoted to “bilateral meetings”. On this occasion, Minister HELE Pierre received officials from West Africa Blue, WWF and FAO, respectively who expressed their interest in working with Cameroon Government under the GEF at the end of this 7th General Assembly.
Lastly, “plenary sessions” were held to amend and validate the documents that will serve as a reference framework for the upcoming years. The event ended with an official closing ceremony presided over by the Canadian Prime Minister, His Excellency Justin TRUDEAU.
As a reminder, the GEF Assembly meets every 4 years. It brings together participants from 185 countries who are key players involved in environmental management at the policy, operational and strategic levels. This year, 15000 delegates worldwide, including 85 Ministers in charge of environment and related issues took part in the deliberations.
