The Yabassi and Nlonako Key Biodiversity Area (KBA): working towards better conservation and restoration

14 août 2024

Qualified MINEPDED staff, particularly those working in the Nkam Division, took part in a joint workshop on the aforementioned topic in question, which held on Tuesday 13 August 2024 at the Yabassi City Council, organized by the NGO Ajemalebu Self Help (AJESH).

The Senior Divisional Officer of the Nkam, represented by his 1st deputy Abbo Mohamadou, opened the workshop, which focused on building the capacity of local stakeholders in biodiversity monitoring, forestry and anti-poaching tools. Some thirty participants, including representatives of various sectors involved (MINEPDED, MINFOF), civil society and local communities in the area (Yaounde, Douala, Yabassi, Bonepoupa, Nlonako, Yingui) worked on the following points:

  • taking stock of biodiversity in the Yabassi KBA;
  • identification of endangered species and poaching activities;
  • new tools for monitoring and surveillance of the forest cover
  • the drivers of degradation
  • a strategy and managers for the sustainable monitoring of biodiversity in the Yabassi and Nlonako KBAs.

The Yabassi and Nlonako KBA is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora, many of which are endangered. It faces both natural and man-made threats, notably poaching and abusive logging. This threat is partly due to its proximity to two of Cameroon’s largest cities (Douala and Yaoundé).
